A fresh winter snow fall this weekend brought back the feel of the holiday season. A song can also bring back favorite memories. I like the song Roll Out the Barrel because I remember my Grandpa playing that on the organ back in Lincolnwood, IL. When I play a song on the dulcimer (I don't know how to play Roll Out the Barrel) I wonder what memories it might bring to others. Our minds are complex networks. I value the links we make as we learn and grow. Some of my favorite memories aren't necessarily of things but are of happenings. Over the years I've worked hard at creating events involving folk music and local artisans. I know with each event there will be multiple connections made as people learn things, meet knew people, get in touch with a new skill or awareness, or simply appreciate the locally-made purchase. The end of the year is coming right up. I can hardly keep up with the number of the day it is. I like to be busy but I'm ready for a bit of a break. I'm good at schedule a few (or my husband might say a few too many) things every day. Preparing for this event, helping on this project, get people together for a game night or movie, or something that we both like is going for a winter evening walk. I'm not good at doing nothing. We do have an infrared sauna in our living room and with the colder nights I'm 'fire it up.' I can bring in a book or heck I can watch tv through the glass window. I can write a list of things to do or compose a song. What I'll try to do before the end of the week is go in and just sit and relax. I don't think I'd fall asleep because there isn't space to lay down. Time to ourselves is something we all need. Okay I do think time with ourselves can be with our dulcimer. In this busier time of year do take time to cherish the time we have.
